For most adult partial cases where the patient will live with the partial for 10+ years, cast metal is the right call. The trade-off is metal clasps visible at the buccal of clasp-bearing teeth, which can be an esthetic concern depending on the case.
Cast metal frames give retention and longevity. Flexible thermoplastics give comfort and esthetics. Each wins clean cases; combinations exist when the case needs both.
Chrome-cobalt frame designed around the case. Maximum retention from precise clasp geometry. The longest-lived option, fits day one, retains for years.
Valplast, Duraflex, and related thermoplastic materials. More patient comfort, esthetic clasps, but less retention precision and shorter service life than cast.

Strength wins. No reason to risk porcelain chipping under heavy occlusion when monolithic delivers comparable esthetics for a posterior position.
Esthetics wins. If thin prep is possible, Emax usually edges out. Otherwise layered zirconia gets there with custom characterization.

Stain-and-glaze characterization on monolithic gets most anterior cases into the acceptable-match range without the layered overhead.
The clasp choice depends on the abutment, the undercut, and the esthetic demand. We work the design with the dentist when the case warrants it. Incomplete prescriptions are the single largest cause of cast partial remakes, we’d rather call about a missing piece of information than fabricate to a guess.
For combination cases that benefit from a cast frame with flex clasps on anterior abutments, we do those routinely. The metal carries retention; the flex carries esthetics.
